VW Phaeton V6 TDI: Luxury for starters

The "small" Diesel is to become the turbo of the Volkswagen flagship

Six is good. Amazingly well: Six cylinders, which supply 225 Diesel horse power and top torque of 450 Nm (already starting from 1400/min), fits the Volkswagen flagship Phaeton well. One so far knows it mainly concerning the powerful 8-, 10- and 12-cylinder-motors. Anyhow it applies to lift a live weight of 2158 Kilos in a dignified manner. And that is the ability of the small self igniter, which rounds off the motor pallet downwardly, with the 6-gear-automatic in 8.8 seconds (on 100 km/h), without thereby working roaring or loud.

For 67.530 Euros, which are at the same time the new entrance price into the Phaeton world, one receives permanent all-wheel drive (4Motion), carbon particulate filter and 6-gear-automatic (Tiptronic) in series. Additionally standard is wood equipment, 4-zones-climate-automatic, audio system with CD changer and 10 loudspeakers, optical and acoustic spacer sensors in front and at the back and much more, of what one expects in the luxury class.

Thus the V6-Diesel (with newly developed spin control through electrically adjustable spin flaps) might probably steal 241 HP V6-Benziner's show, which with a weaker torque costs 71.570 Euros.

During first test travels the combination of the V6-Diesel and Phaeton could quite inspire. The standard pneumatic suspension contained in the equipment, provides neat comfort even on bad roads. The car cannot only be adjusted harder or softer while driving; it is also possible to lift the total level of the car body.

The quality of workmanship of leather and wood, which is ensured by the laid out with wood parquet and worth to be seen Volkswagen VW manufactory in Dresden, is outstanding and the electrical adjusting possibilities for the seats (in front and at the back) are – almost boundlessly, inclusive back massage function.

To be criticized is the fact that at the rear, with 1.80 meters size one already lightly touches the roof in the upright seating position and that the center console of the four seat version, which only includes the climate control and seat adjustment for the rear passengers, is too dominant and furthermore made off unsuitable cheap looking plastics.

About 4000 Euros more one has to pay, if one wants to experience the same diesel unit (starting autumn, comes also with the Touareg) in the AUDI A8 Quattro. Exactly at this point one will see whether the prestigious start of VOLKSWAGEN into the upper class succeeds, because the three-liter self ignite is to become the turbo for the up to now not so outstanding sales figures of the noble car body. Nevertheless one at least displaced the Jaguar XJ at place 5 in Austria and now behind Audi A8, BMWS 7 and Mercedes S to the fourth place regarding sales figures.
