Toyotas RAV4 was definitely the big boss in the area of smaller SUVs so far. That should be evidence enough that the Japanese car builders managed best to build a car that fulfilled both the needs for higher seats, athletic off-road look but still staying within the limits of smaller city dimension.

The new RAV4 suits all that but the last. It grew almost 15cm in length (total 4,4m) and now is 8cm wider. One will see whether customers will switch to those new measures or stay with the city prove version and wait for the smaller SUV that Toyota/Daihatsu will introduce within this year.

Other than that, the new Rav4 serves the former singles that grew into families in an excellent way. Plenty of space from head to foot, deposits, and collapsible seats that can be transformed into an even trunk compartment within seconds. The trunk itself is positioned a little higher, allowing it to be an even surface when the seats are dropped down.

Excellent workmanship, easy to survey, an ordinary dashboard are some of the cornerstones of the 1600 kilo vehicle. A comfortable but still tough suspension handles that weight even in fast turns when the car tends to incline like most other SUVs.

The new RAV4 is available explicitly with five doors and permanent four-wheel drive that is able to shift the power from 55:45 up to 100% to the front axis.

Drawback: Motor. In Austria, the so called entry-level model consists of a self-igniting engine without particle filter (in series by end of this year) with an exaggerated 140 HP. When tested it was striking that it had a tremendous petrol consumption just like the 170 HP version with in series catalyst.

Probably every tenth sold car will be powered with a petrol engine, available with a 5-gear-shift or automatic.

Three fittings are offered (Diesel starting from 29.871 Euro in Austria). In series: 9 Airbags (incl. knee-airbag for driver), ABS with EBD and TCS, ISOFIX, CD-Radio, Air condition. Version "Elegance" offers in addition: fog light, electronic outside mirror, CD-switch, cooled glove compartment and a leather steering wheel. Model "Comfort" additionally offers: disc brakes in the back, cruise control and a rain sensor. In addition: Seat heating, leather fittings, navigation.

The 170-HP Diesel is also offered as model "X", which comes with 18-inch-special tyre equipment and therefore with no spare wheel in the back. It also has leather fittings and an electric powered driver seat.
