Suzuki Alto: Dwarf rebellion

Comeback in the automobile flea circus

Excitement reigns in the flea circus, in the district of the smallest ones of the small ones: Suzuki mixes the dwarf country up this year. Since 1979 its new edition of the Alto was sold 7.3 million times world-wide. In the world of the side and town center cars a price of 8800 Euros (in Austria) is already equipment-moderately, inclusive power steering, window regulator, two Airbags, central locking with remote control and five doors in series are a clear challenge. – ABS or (!) climate control system is available with surcharge.

The in India manufactured Alto has got what it takes as a side car with its rev-happy sportster motor: Four passengers, or better: two adults, two children or two adults and - thanks to the divided, inclinable rear seat – up to 725 liters luggage in the rear will probably be the practice freight of the small one.

That in case of an occupation with four adults (á 75 kilograms) only about 50 kilos luggage up to the permissible total weight remains shows the borders of a small car.

Remarkable for 3.8 m is the handling of the Alto, even with quicker pace, if one once got accustomed to the direct power steering. This is a (side-) car for practical thinkers.

Driving the Suzuki Alto

Engine/Powertrain * * * * *
We liked: The 46 kW/63 HP engine fits the 800-Kilo-Alto well. Works agile can be driven sportily too.
We didn't like: Premium fuel necessary; with sporty driving fashion consumption rose to more than 7 l/100 km during the test.

Comfort * * *
We liked: Luxury may not be expected with this favorable price; interior: spartanic, properly.
We didn't like: Head rest not inclinable in front, no head rest at the back, leg rest for driver/front seat passengers is too short.

Vehicle Handling * * * *
We liked: Firm chassis; very direct steering wheel reaction is good for parking.
We didn't like: Direct steering element requires concentration with high speed; stiff gear shift; small range because of small fuel level in the tank.

Space/Variability * * * * *
We liked: The head liberty is astonishing; thanks to flexible front seat covering leg liberty is given at the back either, well usable loading space (up to 432 l).
We didn't like: In the rear only enough room for two adult passengers.

Measured Values * * * * *
Top speed: 155 km/h. Acceleration: from 0 to 100 km/h in 14.8 seconds. Test consumption: 6.5 liter on 100 km. Price: 8800 Euros (including any taxes).
