It is not a very bright light that car producer Ssangyong shines across Europe so far, although they profit from a cooperation with Mercedes regarding engines since 1991 casting a bit of the fire of the renown German star on them. On the other hand Ssangyong was already market leader with its SUVs in the domestic market of Korea in 2003 ahead of Hyundai and Kia. And while the company is no longer part of Daewoo motors it strains to regain territory in Europe in its traditional 4x4-niche with improved, cheaper models.
Their biggest hope is the new Ssangyong Rexton now available with a 165 hp diesel engine (formerly 120 hp), optionally to be ordered as a seven seater. Italy's styling studio Giugiaro did the face lift and the chassis was improved. Although the new model is not the same seesaw softy as its siblings Musso and Korando it still gives you the feeling of being out at sea in faster turns.
The good news: the Rexton is yours starting at 27.900 Euros (in Germany) – 17.494 pounds in UK – with ABS, traction control and radio/CD player as standards. You will have to take the truck-like gearbox (in the Rexton, the Musso and the Korando) with its long, imprecise action as part of the exotic automotive adventure, as well as the rather rustique workmanship in all three vehicles and the rather cheap choice of materials for the interior.
Particularly for farmers up in the mountains the Ssangyong Musso is an interesting option as the company introduces a new pickup version with a total of two seat rows and there is a tax exemption for trucks in certain countries like in Austria that reduces the price quite a bit. The Musso is available from 24.900 Euros, the Korando starting from 22.650 Euros (prices in Germany).
