Porsche 911 Carrera 4S: Kick Me!

The new 4WD-sportscar (series 997) evokes emotional rallye fantasies

Only once drive like German rallye grandmaster Walter Roehrl, who, while testing the new Carrera 4S on the back paths of the Monte Carlo Rallye, showed how impressively Porsches newest four-wheel-drive-creation whips around bends: What he would improve? Maybe more power... – With fat 355 hp a joke that only a few rallye pros might not laugh at.

He is age 47, earns 12.000 Euros a month and parks two additional cars in his garage, say the stats about the typical Carrera customer. But there might be a few not so typical ones as well. Statistics also say that more than half of the customers go for the 4WD-version with the price tag of about 7000 Euros plus.

But with the 911 Carrera – other than with other 4WDs – there is also a second reason to go for the 4x4 than just for "more security". Rallye legend Walter Roehrl impressively demonstrated this little extra on a cordoned off serpentine road on a particularly tricky section at Frances Col de Turini: 4WD gives you even more traction when accelerating out of the turns. That buys quite a bit of time. Even if its in a field that only folks like Roehrl can properly harvest. But the statistical 47 years old buyer will probably more enjoy the fact that he can also comfortably cruise through downtown city traffic with a high definition sports tool that growls "Kick me!" every time you start the engine.

With a close look you might detect that the 4WD-911 is 44 millimetres wider at the rear than the normal version. Also the fuel capacity was increased to take 67 litres. The car holds to the road stunningly, the handling is just perfect – a fact you can also hear from Walter Roehrl. Only when you hit the gas to impetuously in the really tight turns ESP will rule you down heavily. Otherwise you wouldn't really need the PSM ("Porsche Stability Management") with this gunner in practice.

The 4WD-911 is available in Europe starting from October 22nd 2005 in the following versions: Carrera 4 (325 hp) at 81.500 Euro, as Carrera 4S (355 hp) at 89.816 Euro (83.400 $ in the US) und as 4S Cabriolet at 99.792 Euros (93.200 $ in the US). Tiptronic instead of the great six speed manual gearbox takes additional 3500 Euros and a few tenths of seconds from 0 to 100 km/h (prices in Austria with taxes).
