Mazda 5 GTA: Origami

It doesn't look like being able to conjure up three seat rows, and friends, you take home, being the only sober one, will effusively thank you in the next morning. But at that moment you already forgot that the third (and unfortunately the second row too) row is rather something for teenagers and those who need an auxiliary seat. Because the Mazda 5 is simply to short in order to be a serious six seater for adults. Consequentially, there are only 112 remaining litres of boot capacity if all seats are in use. But on the other side, the successor of the Premacy and MPV based on the Mazda 3 is slimmer and more sportive than its competitors.

Finest Origami folding art, you can also find under the cushions of the second row's single seats. There you can choose between a folding midmounted seat, and (below the other cushion) a folding centre console with a beverage holder. Altogether, the tested top version of the GTA, with its mechanically excellent sliding doors at the back, is a too completely equipped car for families with many children.

Amongst other things, you get ABS with EBD, traction control and stability system, airbags in all of the three rows, automatic air condition, rain sensitive windshield wipers and light sensors, xenon-headlights, CD radio with HDD, navigation system with a rear view camera and sportive pushrods, which lengthen the vehicle by about 10 cm, at a price of 30.400 Euros.

For additional 2200 Euros, you get the diesel version with 143 PS and a six speed manual, which possibly addresses Austrian customers more.

Engine/Powertrain * *
We liked: A rev-happy petrol engine with an acceptable acceleration.
We didn't like: Relatively high mileage, loud at high rev (which is needed for a proper acceleration). A sixth gear would be desirable.

Comfort * * *
We liked: Very comfortable seats in the first row. Enjoyable: In spite of sliding doors, the windows of the second row can be opened.
We didn't like: Seats in the second and third row have hardly any leg rest, the folding midmounted seat is more like an auxiliary seat, and, in case of long distances, the third row is only something for children.

Driving Characteristics * * * *
We liked: Firm, but still comfortable chassis. In spite of its size the Mazda features good road hugging characteristics even in fast turns and with full loading. Agreeably neutral steering in situations of quick weight shifts.
We didn't like: Steering could be more instantaneous.

Space/Variability * * * *
We liked: Plenty of head room in all three rows. Very variable seat- and boot system.
We didn't like: Single seats in the second row offer hardly any armrest and besides the centre console no placement area. Not enough space in order to be an adequate six seater for long distances.

Performance * * *
Top speed: 196 km/h. Acceleration: from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.8 seconds. Tested fuel consumption: 10.6 litres per 100 km. Price (Mazda 5 2.0i GTA): 30.400 Euros (in Austria, incl. all taxes)
