Honda FR-V CTDi: Broadly Based

Three seats in front and back: That's not new, but still innovative (unlike the unspeakable term FR-V). It's not just big families that know the benefits of such a six-pack that does not come as a monster van.

But there are significant differences to the only competitor of the Honda FR-V: The Fiat Multipla is almost 30 centimetres shorter, making it a practical city cruiser, and the interior concept offers more loading space. The FR-V profits as far as comfort, workmanship and ambience. Not to mention the tested self-igniting engine that ranked at 8 litres diesel consumption for the rather heavy FR-V, but offers 140 hp and petrol engine like torque.

Room for improvement: The oddly confined leg space for the front seat passenger (the middle one is suitable rather for kids anyway), the unflattering front dome lamp that dazzles the driver and is too dark for the passenger, the lack of deposits and tiny rear wipers.

Very pleasant is the interior and haptics. Especially pulling the hand brake is more than fun!

Standard in the model Executive: CST, Xenon-light, alarm system, cruise control, rain sensor, ISOFIX, automatic air conditioning and an excellent audio system with CD-switch. Additional: navigation for 2848 Euro (price in Austria).

Engine/Powertrain * * * * *
We liked: One of the best 4-cylinder-diesel engines available, together with a fine tuned 6-gear-shift.
We didn't like: Contrary to company opinions heavy diesel pounding, especially at cold engine temperature.

Comfort * * * *
We liked: Seats with good sideward support, noble ambience with excellent workmanship.
We didn't like: Firm suspension: good for highway driving, unpleasant on rough surface, relatively narrow Seats (3 per row) with short leg support.

Driving Characteristics * * * *
We liked: Placid, rather neutral driving behaviour, good speedup through hefty motor and closely spaced shift, short shift movement, steering allows good road contact.
We didn't like: : The wind and tires sweep loudly at higher speeds

Room Capacities/Variability * * *
We liked: Very convenient and innovative because two three seat rows.
We didn't like: In fact less usable space and leg room than expected. Seats in the back are just collapsible but cannot be removed, not enough or big enough deposits.

Performance * * * *
Top speed: 190 km/h. Acceleration: from 0 to 100 km/h in 10,2 seconds. Tested fuel consumption: 7,8 litres for 100 km. Price (Honda FR-V 2.2 i-CTDi Executive): 30.660 Euro (in Austria, incl. all taxes)
