Fiat Croma 1.9 JTD: Papa-Mobile

After 9 years back in the program: How the Croma shows off in our endurance test

In 1994 Fiat's last Croma station wagon of the so-called D-class, also represented by VW Passat, Ford Mondeo and Opel Vectra left the production line. Now he's back. And the Italians spared no effort to meet the demands of business men of the middle management who need a company car and father's between 30 and 50 (so the aspired target group).

7500 kilometers in the new Fiat Croma: Enough time to get familiar with each other and get to know some of the weaknesses and strengths of each other. Evident at the very first moment, during the routing maneuvers and lasting for months whenever backing into a parking space: The Croma is larger as one would think. This is due to the trick of adding bigger curves and bulges at places of the car where there already are some. Thus sharp tongued objectors would call the Croma flatulently. In practice this is perceivable because of an astounding loading volume and – at least at the rear, nice head liberty. In the front row, where one has an elevated view to the street, head liberty is not that amazing.

A very good choice is the 150-PS-Turbodiesel, which lies in the offered middle field of Fiat with its performance and (thanks to the 6-speed-transmission) shines with flabbergasting consumption values in this class.

If traveling together for such a long time, some weaknesses like abrupt radio switch off and Navi when shutting the motor off, the in winter too often overstrained glass wiper or the (Fiat-typical) climate control unit making itself independent every now and then don't count so much anymore. Other things are unfortunately more annoying: The navigation- and CD radio system (additional) of the test Croma is not only hard to be read, but also complex and laborious to handle.

In other respects Croma is a more inconspicuous, yet very practical car, which is not only like a van almost suitable for great family vacations, but is also able to offer a good portion of genuine limousine comfort in the second row.

The Croma is 3 cm higher and 24 cm longer as the Stilo estate car and shares the very positively conspicuous chassis of the Opel Vectra. Also felicitous: the low noise level inside, improved by a special film of polyvinyl in the windshield.

Newly developed and for the first time available in the Fiat Croma is a for more powerful motors suitable 6-speed manual transmission, as well as a 6-speed automatic transmission, which can also possible be manually shifted.

Weak points: The rear head rests can not be far enough wheeled-away for adults and disturb at the back. Belts are not adjustable in height, the center seat in the second row is adamant because of the tipped up arm rest and the door storage shelves could be deeper for maps.

During the 7500 test kilometers only one check and brake readjust (due to noises) was necessary, covered by the guarantee.

Serial on board of the tested Fiat Croma 1.9 JTD Multijet 150 Emotion on the road: 7 airbags (incl. driver-knee-airbag), ABS with ESP, 2 ISOFIX anchoring for rear children seats, fog lights, heatable exterior mirrors, back up sensors, cruise control, CD-radio.

Extras: Metallic paint (514 Euros), leather upholstery (1518 Euros), steering-wheel control (79 Euros), Navigation-System (2376 Euros – prices in Austria incl. taxes)
