Chrysler Crossfire with 218 hp: Ego Shooter

Caution: This car features a heavy duty punch line...

Fire up your cd player with a country music disc and you'll feel yourself beamed onto an endless US highway (with cop cars lurking behind huge cactus plants). Traffic lights seem not to be part of this grand coupés vocabulary. Too far has one to lean over the steering wheel to eye the signals for takeoff above the tarmac. On the other hand: Even if you are late you will lose most of your opponents right at the start line with 218 hp and the Mercedes automatic transmission doing their job.

For quicker and more fun paces up curvy mountain roads the choice to take is probably the six-speed manual gearbox, although even the manual mode of the rather leisurely tuned automatic allows reasonable slalom fun.

Victim to the great exterior design with its aggressive profile is the view through the rear window. The already narrow sight margins are halved as soon as the deployable rear wing rises into view at around 100 km/h.

Chrylser might also have taken more efforts with the main panel: The plastic silver switches (especially the two heat adjustment wheels) are cheap thrifty style and the steering wheel has an uncomfortable feel, because of an unnecessarily edgy rim.

Included in the standard configuration: 4-channel ABS with ESP and traction control, four airbags, burglar alarm, leather lined cabin, heatable seats. Additional: Metallic finish.

Astonishing for the outlines of a two seater is the huge boot capacity. Does Chrysler also offer a decent skiing rack for the Crossy? Off we go for a decent fun ride to St. Moritz or Chamonix...

Engine/Powertrain * * * * *
We liked: The engine comes from the Mercedes SLK and leaves little to ask for at a maximum torque of 310 Nm: It operates cultivatedly and quiet until you unleash the beast within with a little tap on the accelerator.
We didn't like: The naturally quite generous fuel consumption of the six pack.

Comfort * * * *
We liked: The automatic transmission allows relaxed leisure-cruising. Both seats can be adjusted electrically even in height.
We didn't like: Very hard trim, entering and exiting this car affords sporty customers, the alignment of the levers along the steering wheel are hard to get used to.

Driving Characteristics * * * *
We liked: Hugs tight curves with ease, but despite traction control affords an active driving style nonetheless on slippery roads
We didn't like: Steering could be more precise, getting going on snow needs some sensitivity, wind noises at higher speeds.

Room Capacities/Variability * * *
We liked: The boot (215 litres) easily holds luggage for two, the stowing panel between the seats is wide enough for CDs.
We didn't like: Few and small panels fo mobiles, keys, sunglasses and stuff. The boot lid (290 Euros) should be included for a car with this level of show effect.

Performance * * * * *
Top speed: 250 km/h. Acceleration: 0 – 100 km/h in 6,9 seconds. Fuel consumption during test drive: 11,8 litres/100 km. Price (with automatic transmission): 33.700 Euro (in Germany, 30.070 $ in the US)
