BMW 330xd Touring (with x-Drive): All-wheel muscle man

An inconspicuous Diesel-station wagon with 4WD, which puts the fear of god into sports cars

The seats in the BMWs 330xd Touring have to bear a lot: It makes so much fun, to strongly push the throttle standing, that due to the intense acceleration it presses the occupants deep into the distinguished seating. With a torque of 500 Nm the much understated station wagon (also thanks to x-Drive 4WD) blows some Porsche and even motorcycles away at the traffic light. The well aligned 6-gear-automatic transmission also contributes the casual-confident appearance. And, the reason why the feeling during driving is not at all estate-like is supported by the smooth overall-design of the Touring and the fact that it has a sports car similar low seating position.

Seriously to be criticized beside the inevitable opulent price is nearly nothing. Except maybe, that because of the latch construction the trunk lid rattles so much in slamming and one would wish to have more storage spaces.

It is nice that the rear luggage cover – in double pushing the opener – snaps automatically upward. However one should not forget to manually lower it again, since at the rearview mirror will be standing a black wall.

Series for the BMW 330xd Touring is among other things: 6 airbags, stability- and traction control, climate control system, fog lights.

As extra in the test car among other things: The Austrian package with air conditioning, parking sensors, rain sensor, (very good) radio and ski bag for 1874 Euros (prices in Austria). Navigation for 2976 Euros.

Engine/Powertrain * * * * *
We liked: The 6-cylinder-Diesel (with particle filter) is such a trip with its 500 Nm. There is nearly nothing to hear from the Diesel-motor in the passenger compartment.
We didn't like: The Diesel-consumption thus goes significantly beyond the 10 liters in city limits.

Comfort * * * *
We liked: Seats with very good leg rest and good side footing in front. Sportive chassis. Excellent workmanship.
We didn't like: Little leg rest in the rear, automatic rearview mirror dim-out should be disengageable. Too large sun visors.

Handling * * * * *
We liked: Direct, sporty steering element with very good wheel. No noise of the wind even with a fast tempo. Very good chassis in connection with all-wheel-drive makes high curve speeds possible.
We didn't like: Servo steering is too sluggish.

Room Capacities/Variability * * *
We liked: Rear seat is stowable fast to a flat loading area. Plenty of head liberty also in the rear
We didn't like: All in all too less storage shelves, particularly in the center console. Center seat position in the rear is only useable in case of emergency, because it is much too hard.

Performance * * * *
Top speed: 236 km/h. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. Fuel consumption during test drive: 9.9 liters on 100 km. Price (330xd Touring with x-Drive and automatic transmission):  50.858 Euros (in Austria, including taxes)
