The deliveries of the new Audi A6 with its striking grille are in since March 2005 and with it also the Avant estate with six-cylinder turbo diesel and four wheel drive. Keeping it short: This car offers everything a sports or family man desires with upscale finish as well as upscale prices. A great car for those who hit the lottery jackpot and want to enjoy in a discreet way but without showing of. Only for lottery winners? Well. Although the tested car is available for 54.000 Euro in the entry-level version (in Austria), it adds over 18.000 Euro for gizmos as leather, navigation, alarm system, automatic air conditioning, sunroof but also for normal accessories as multifunction steering wheel, park distance control system, electrically adjustable front seats, cruise control and breakdown triangle. One could get two compact cars for that additional money. All together that is more than a million in old Austrian currency; however it just fits to Audis usual surcharges.
In exchange you get a car with a class of one's own and a blazing but athletic design. The suspension is perfectly coordinated with the powerful motor to which the permanent four wheel drive fits like icing on the cake. In addition fuel economy is very good for this engine category.
The only drawback of the tested car was the beeping-belt sensor of the passenger seat: A light bag was enough to outsmart the electronics and set off the alarm. Only solution: Buckle the bag.
On demand the new A6 is also available with air suspension that was left to luxury class like the Audi A8 so far. What's more, you can operate the 6 speed tiptronic from the multifunction steering wheel (for surcharge) with two compensators.

Engine/Powertrain *****
We liked: A torque figure that starts at 1400 rpm and has no upward limit. Athletic and sharp to drive, but also going subtle is possible. All according to six-cylinder standars.
The engine comes from the Mercedes SLK and leaves little to ask for at a maximum torque of 310 Nm: It operates cultivatedly and quiet until you unleash the beast within with a little tap on the accelerator.
We didn't like: The rather high diesel noise when running idle.
Comfort ****
We liked: Seats suitable for long road trips, excellent workmanship and high safety, good and easily operable on-board computer.
We didn't like: Optional equipment comes for too much extra money, although it leaves nothing to be desired. Radio speakers are not loud enough.
Driving Characteristics *****
We liked: The rigid body and a very firm suspension keep the powerful motor within limits but without appearing to rigorously. Six-speed automatic (tiptronic) reacts without interruptions for a sportier driving style in the sports program. The noise level is also kept very low, even at high speed.
Room Capacities/Variability ****
We liked: Loads of leg and headroom, even for tall people in the back row. Plenty of storage spaces, complex but convenient guide rails for fixing luggage in the trunk, loading space from 565 up to 1660 litres.
We didn't like: No space for sun-glasses.
Performance ****
Top speed: 240 km/h. Acceleration: from 0 to 100 km/h in 7,3 seconds. Tested fuel consumption: 10,1 litres for 100 km. Price (A6 Avant 3.0 TDI V6 Quattro with particle filter): 53.690 Euro (in Austria, incl. all taxes)
