An off-road car by Alfa Romeo? At the first glance the Crosswagon looks somewhat artificial like the former Golf Country: A little body kit on the one side and the whole thing a little bit higher on the other side. It will be up to individual judgement whether that fits to the traditional gentle and noble Alfa-Design. But one thing is for sure: It is not the first 4 wheel drive built by Alfa and just like the Alfa 33 and 155 it offers much more space below: Space for rocks, dirt and desert.
One will see if the Crosswagon Q4 and the Sportwagon Q4 will stop BMWs and Audi's running gear from running. At least the starting price of 33.500 Euro is an aggressive step in that direction. Crafty differentials in the area of 4 wheel drives are also bought from the same Expert (Torsen) and Alfa is all serious about it: Following the estate, the other models were announced to continue the off-road tour.
After looking at potential customers for the off-road estate, Alfa decided to offer the Q4 only in the powerful 150 hp diesel version. When tested it lacked the great feeling one has when normally driving an Alfa. The engine was a bit loud and the power output was untypically weak.
Concerning the engineering: The 4 wheel drive slightly favours the back with a power distribution of 58:42, but can also shift up to 70% of the power to the front or back when necessary.
As standard all Q4 models come with air condition, ESP, CD-radio, 6-gear-shift (in need of improvement concerning the accuracy) and cruise control.
